First Impression of the Battle Dragon PC Controllers

PowerA kindly sent us their Battle Dragon and Battle Dragon Advanced wireless controllers to try. Here, we take a first look at the controllers and review them based on our first impressions!

    First impression rating:

Colors of both controllers look very sleek
    Material looks good and durable
Shape is similar to what I’m familiar with

These PC controllers caught my eye with their sleek black design and unique dragon embellishments. The Battle Dragon Advanced features a striking gold dragon embellishment, but I find myself leaning toward the full black design for a more minimalist vibe (but that’s just my personal preference!).

Shape-wise, they’re similar to the Xbox and PS5 controllers, making them feel familiar in hand. The height of the analog sticks is similar too!

The texture on the back of the Battle Dragon Advanced has an interesting scaly feeling, making it a bit rougher than the Battle Dragon. It’s something to get used to but it’s meant for a better grip!

Features of the Battle Dragon PC Controllers

    Wireless connectivity

These controllers come with a wired USB option, but they also offer wireless and Bluetooth connectivity. I personally love the wireless and Bluetooth options because I don’t have to be restricted by cumbersome wires anymore.

Setting them up wirelessly or via Bluetooth was a breeze too; the controllers were instantly detected, making it a super quick and easy process.

    Hall effects

Both Battle Dragon controllers feature analog sticks with hall effect sensors, which help prevent drifting while minimizing wear and tear. Even better, they offer improved responsiveness and precision, which is crucial, especially for those intense fighting and FPS (first-person shooter) games!

    Mappable buttons

Both controllers come with four mappable advanced gaming buttons that can be customized to match your unique play style. You can set up shortcuts for quick combos or streamline your controls for faster reactions to make your gameplay so much smoother and more efficient. It’s like having that extra edge that can really make a difference when things get intense!

    Rating:

    Comfortable analog caps
The analog caps feel extra thick, which makes them super comfortable to grip during long gaming sessions. Plus, the non-slip design is great if you’ve got sweaty palms like me 😅 They even come with textured caps that give you a more secure hold.

    Adjustable trigger locks
The adjustable trigger locks are a really handy feature, especially if you’re into FPS games or just enjoy longer gaming sessions. You can customize how deep the trigger needs to go before it engages, which makes a big difference in reaction time.

Whether you want quicker, snappier shots in a fast-paced game or just prefer a lighter touch to avoid finger fatigue, it’s nice to have that level of control. It’s one of those small tweaks that adds extra comfort and responsiveness to your gameplay.

    Location of advanced gaming buttons
The advanced gaming buttons feel a little awkward because they’re located on the underside of the controller. But honestly, I think it’s just one of those things that’ll feel more natural over time, especially as I get more familiar with the layout. Once I get used to it, I’m sure it’ll be just fine—and maybe even more convenient in the long run!

    Cross D-pad (directional pad)
The Battle Dragon controller features a cross D-pad instead of a shield plate (which is what I’m used to). For me, this made controlling diagonal directions a bit tricky because you have to press two directions at once to get that diagonal movement, and it’s not as smooth as I’d like.

But that’s just personal preference—I know some gamers actually prefer the cross or separated D-pad for better precision. It might take some getting used to, especially if you’re used to the shield-style D-pad, but I can see how others might like this style better!

    Rating:

In addition to the points mentioned above for the Battle Dragon controller, there were two other features that I love about the Battle Dragon Advanced.

    Height-adjustable analog sticks
One thing I really appreciate about the Battle Dragon Advanced is the height-adjustable analog sticks. Whether you have longer or shorter fingers, you can tweak the height to match your gaming style, which is a nice touch for personalizing your setup.

I chose to adjust the height shorter as it makes the controllers more sensitive, so even a slight tilt of the stick can translate into quick, precise movements. This is perfect for those who like snappy controls. Adjusting the height is super simple too; just rotate the stick to raise or lower it, and you’re good to go!

Overall, it’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference in the feel of the game, at least in my humble opinion.

Satisfying feel of the mechanical switches
Different people probably have a different opinion on this but I personally love the mechanical switches on this controller. They’ve got that clicky, tactile feel—kind of like pressing a mechanical mouse button—which makes each press feel super satisfying.

Overall Thoughts on the Battle Dragon PC Controllers

Overall, the PowerA Battle Dragon PC controllers were a pleasant surprise. It’s always a plus when they’re plug-and-play devices with no need for driver installations because it saves so much hassle. While there’s a bit of setup needed for Steam in order for the controllers to work smoothly with some games, it’s a pretty quick and easy process.

The material and ergonomic design of these controllers also feel great. In fact, they’re more comfortable than the PS5 one I have, so I can foresee that they’re going to be great for long gaming sessions 😉

It would be really cool if PowerA offered customisable faceplates and buttons (just a thought!) but all in all, these controllers are a solid choice for gamers looking for both comfort and performance!
