Properties of Common Bed Sheet Materials

There are 7 main bedsheet materials that are common in the market. Each of them have their unique characteristics to suit the needs of different types of sleepers!

Sleeper type: Varies
Feel: Varies

We all know cotton as the OG material for sheets, but did you know that there are different categories of cotton? Here are some factors to consider when choosing cotton sheets!

Staple length
Staple length refers to the length of fibres that are used to weave cotton into a sheet. There are 3 lengths — short staple, long staple and extra-long staple. The longer the staple, the more durable and the higher the quality of cotton. Thus, extra-long staple is the best.

Some examples of cotton staples are Egyptian, Pima/Supima and American Upland. Egyptian cotton is the highest quality of the lot, as it’s usually extra-long staple.

Weave
The weave of sheets is the technique used to interlace the threads. Each technique adds a different level of softness and structural durability, even to lower quality cotton. Examples of weaves are flannel, percale, sateen and jersey knit (not woven).

Single-ply or multi-ply
Going for single ply cotton sheets is better as it indicates softness and durability.

Because there are so many categories of cotton, here’s a guide:
• If you’re a cold sleeper, go for jersey cotton for cosiness.
• If you’re a hot sleeper, go for long staple cotton for a cooler sleep.
• If you’re a mid hot/cold sleeper, go for a tight percale weave for a mid cool/cosy feel.

Sleeper type: Varies
Feel: Varies

The polyester material that’s used to manufacture bedsheets and clothing is made from the same polymers used to make plastic bottles. That’s why pure polyester is stiff and scratchy, and a polyester blend is usually used to enhance softness.

For example, polyester and cotton creates a soft and smooth feel and it’s less expensive. Microfibre is a popular type of polyester that’s woven more tightly to improve softness and durability. It’s stain-resistant but not as breathable and is more suitable for cold sleepers.

Sleeper type: Any
Feel: Mid

Bedsheets are often referred to as linens, but linen is actually a type of material that’s made from fibres of the flax plant. Linen makes soft, strong and durable sheets. It’s breathable and doesn’t disperse or hold heat in, making it suitable for any type of sleeper that’s looking for mid cool/cosy sheets.

Sleeper type: Hot
Feel: Cool

Pure bamboo fibre is smooth, strong, moisture wicking to keep you cool and hypoallergenic. There are 4 different types and blends of bamboo that are often used to make bedsheets.

Bamboo rayon
Toxic chemicals are used in the fibre manufacturing process to achieve the silky smooth texture of rayon.

Bamboo linen
The manufacturing process is the same as linen fabrics such as cotton. Thus, it tends to wrinkle easily and is not as comfortable as rayon or tencel options. However, it’s extremely durable.

Bamboo tencel / Bamboo lyocell
Bamboo tencel sheets are made using fibre fabricated from the lyocell process. This eco-friendly process involves minimal waste, less water consumption and low emissions.

Bamboo cotton blend
A bamboo cotton blend is approximately 60% bamboo rayon and 40% cotton. This material is stronger than pure bamboo but isn’t as soft.

Sleeper type: Hot
Feel: Cool

Tencel is made from the wood pulp of an eucalyptus tree. It’s known to be as smooth as silk and has antimicrobial properties.

It’s not as breathable as cotton as it tends to hold in heat rather than release it. This keeps you cooler through the night, making it suitable for hot sleepers. Additionally, it’s an environmentally friendly material, great for the environmentally conscious!

Sleeper type: Cold
Feel: Cosy

Flannel is actually a type of weave for cotton, but it’s better considered separately as it’s often advertised as a separate material.

The difference between flannel and flannelette is that the former refers to a wool based material or a wool and cotton blend, while the latter is typically made from cotton and brushed to achieve softness.

Both of them are cosy and designed for cold winter nights and cold sleepers.

Sleeper type: Hot
Feel: Cool

Silk sheets are produced by silkworms to achieve a cooling and luxurious texture that’s hard to beat. It’s the coolest bedsheet material. However, it’s usually too expensive, not environmentally friendly and high maintenance.

FAQs About Bed Sheets

It depends on your personal preference! Here are some popular bedsheet brands that you can consider:

Heavenluxe: Tencel
Granjoy: Tencel, bamboo
Sunday Bedding: Bamboo sateen, French linen, organic cotton, cotton sateen
Oak & Sand: Cotton, tencel, tencel x naia

Thread count refers to the number of vertical and horizontal threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It’s an indication of how tightly woven a fabric is.

For example:Infographic - explanation of how thread count is calculatedImage credit: IUIGA

A single-ply thread that has 150 vertical threads and 150 horizontal threads has a 300 thread count.

Whereas a 3-ply thread that has 100 vertical threads and 100 horizontal threads is said to have a 600 thread count.

Thread count is an indication of how tightly woven a fabric is. As a marketing ploy, extra threads are often spun together within each thread to add to the thread count. However, this method does not do anything to enhance the softness and strength of the fabric.

The quality of bed sheets is dependent on the weaving process and the quality of the yarn used. If a 3-ply thread is used, it’s likely that a multi-ply construction is required to strengthen the lower-grade cotton used.

Thus, to understand whether your sheets are good quality, check whether
• the threads are single ply, and
• the composition of vertical and horizontal threads.

Here are some factors to consider when buying bed sheets:

Type of material
Each bedsheet material has its own unique characteristics, such as feel (whether it’s cool and cosy), look (matte or silky) and what type of sleeper (hot or cold) it’s more suitable for.

Read our materials section above to get a gauge of which material is most suited for you. Check with your preferred brand for more accurate information!

Quality of material
It’s best to go for extra long staple fibres! This is because fewer fibres are required to spin the same length of yarn, resulting in smoother and more comfortable sheets. This also creates a stronger fabric due to minimal interruptions in the yarn.

A general guideline would be to go for sheets made with single-ply threads as this indicates the strength of the material used.

Aesthetics
Consider the overall look of the bed sheets — whether it looks matte or silky and the colours that are available. Additionally, brands may incorporate certain design details to elevate the look of their sheets.

Functionality of design
On top of aesthetics, consider the functionality as well! For example, back envelope pillow cases, and button closures and internal ties in duvet covers. All these features make changing bedsheets more pleasant.

Mattress size
Another thing to note is that mattresses have different heights. So, do ensure that you get sheets that are large enough to fit your mattress!
